KBI - Product Information

KBI Flexi®-Pave has long-term, real world testing and provides superior functionality and design. Its unique properties and features give it a material classification all its own.

  1. Flexible
  2. Porous
  3. Non-cracking (even in freeze/thaw conditions)
  4. Slip-resistant
  5. Superior impact absorption (can withstand 30 ton vehicles)
  6. Heated surface options (non-freezing)
  7. Utilizes high volmues of waste tires in its construction
  8. Many color options

KBI Flexi®-Pave is also resistant to transmission fluid, brake fluid, hydraulic fluid, salt water, oil, chlorine, ozone, bromine, muriatic acid and other hostile materials.

These are properties that no other general material or paving system possess. It will never replace concrete but will greatly enhance a multitude of paving and other construction challenges in commercial, industrial and residential arenas.

  • FLEXIBLE: The flexibility of KBI Flexi®-Pave gives it enormous resistance to sub surface movement that would normally cause trip hazards and separation - ultimately causing costly repairs and site liabilities.

  • EXTREME POROSITY: Given its porous properties, a developer can reduce the need for stormwater retention, providing greater value in the building design and size.

  • RESISTANT TO FREEZE/THAW: Freeze/thaw conditions will not crack the material as the rubber provides for a monolithic expansion and contraction joint. Providing light heat in a northern winter condition can eliminate costly plowing and chemical costs.

  • SLIP RESISTANT: Slip resistance due to the high rubber content makes it suitable for inclined paving.

  • IMPACT ABSORBING: The impact absorption qualities makes this a very favorable surface for jogging trails, nature walks, training facilities, etc.

  • MANY COLOR OPTIONS: Color coordinated or natural options provide the designer or client the ability to match, blend, or highlight colors depending on their desire.

KBI Flexi®-Pave is the only answer to our used tire challenges today.

  FAQ's

1. Can KBI Flexi®-Pave be installed onto the following materials?
Wood: YES
The Urethane binding agent that is used penetrates the wood giving an immense grip.
Steel: YES
Aluminum: YES
The aluminum must be specially primed and then re-primed as per the KBI installation manual.
Concrete: YES
Asphalt: YES
Roofing Felt: YES
Compacted Aggregate: YES
Crushed concrete, crushed asphalt, crushed marble are fine. Limestone products are not acceptable as they will become less porous over time.
Enamel Tile: YES
The tile has to be acid-etched prior to priming
Fiberglass: YES
The fiberglass surface must be made coarse in finish and primed with flat primer.

2. Is KBI Flexi®-Pave resistant to the following materials?
Chlorine: YES

Ozone: YES (for pools which use ozonation)
Bromine: YES (for pools which use bromine instead of chlorine)
Muriatic Acid: YES
Salt Water: YES
Oil: YES
Transmission Fluid: YES
Hydraulic Fluid: YES

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Is KBI Flexi®-Pave slip-resistant?
YES
- The surface is composed of thousands of rubber granules giving it incredible non-slip qualities.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. Will KBI Flexi®-Pave crack?
NO
- Because of the elastic properties.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5. Will KBI Flexi®-Pave have to be resealed because of ultraviolet light breakdown?
NO
- Unlike two-part epoxy resins the products are bound together with a single component urethane that has the same durometer as that of the rubber granule and which is totally resistant to UV degradation.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6. Will KBI Flexi®-Pave fade in time with exposure to the sun?
YES
- Everything fades at certain speeds with continual exposure to sunlight and obviously at different speeds depending upon your location. KBI Flexi®-Pave has UV inhibitors in the colorization process therefore giving longevity to color-fastness.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7. Is KBI Flexi®-Pave porous?
YES
- The products are manufactured using a nominal 3/8” rubber granule and this enables fast evacuation of water through its thickness because of the “open-pore” design.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

8. Do freeze-thaw conditions affect the integrity of KBI Flexi®-Pave?
NO
- It is like one large and continuous expansion and contraction joint. Because of the elastic properties of the urethane and the compression capabilities of rubber, the pressure that is exerted by freezing water does not interfere with the mechanical strength of the products.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

9. Is KBI Flexi®-Pave flammable?
NO
- Tire chips were tested in accordance with the Federal Hazardous Substance Act (16 CFR 1500.44) to determine whether tire material would be considered flammable (a material is considered flammable if it ignites and burns with a self-sustained flame at a rate greater than 0.1 inches per second along its major axis).
From the test results it was concluded that scrap tire material is considered a non-flammable.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

10. Does KBI Flexi®-Pave smell?
YES & NO
– Only initially, similar to a new carpet having a smell. Once it has been installed a few days the smell goes away.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

11. Can KBI Flexi®-Pave be installed in the rain?
NO
- KBI Flexi®-Pave is a moisture-cured product and if the product were actually mixed in the rain the curing would be greatly speeded up, causing the mixture to stiffen and making it impossible to work with. However, when KBI Flexi®-Pave has just been installed the rain will accelerate the curing process, which is why in certain cases a light spray of water is used to accelerate the curing process.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

12. How long does KBI Flexi®-Pave take to cure?
Under normal conditions it is recommended that a period of 24 hours be allowed.
